July 2009 Editorial

July 1, 2009

Well well well…. It looks like summer is in full swing. Where did the first half of the year go already?

Lately we have had a ton of weird stuff happen that goes well beyond that deaths come in 3’s. We had the deaths of many American icons that represented different areas of Americana from film, to television to music to advertising as well as 2 airline crashes.

You can be all hard ass and say you could careless about some or all of the recent passings, yet you can not deny their presence on the culture for better or for worse. Then once the people are gone forever you hear the eulogies and remembrance of the people, their lives and the impact they had on them.

With all the death that has been a big part of the headlines lately have you ever got thinking about your own mortality? If so maybe this is a good time to go to the doctor and get a long over due check up just to make sure everything is cool and that you will be hanging out a lot longer. The other part of death, the part where YOU check out for good… have you ever thought about what people would say, how you would be eulogized and how you would be remembered? If you were to die there are two groups of people that will not believe you are gone, the ones that love you and the ones that hate you. Simply put, the people that love / admire you will show up at your funeral to pay their respects and say goodbye. The ones that hate / loath you will still show up at your funeral just to make sure that you are actually dead and no longer a blight on the planet.

If you knew you would die 3 years from now, would you do anything different? Something to think about, but the person the revels in being known as a complete asshole will never get it and just continue on with how they act out to everyone in the world. The last laugh will be on their dead ass as the people that showed up at your funeral to make sure they are dead will be eating and drinking with thoughts of joy rather than sympathy.

Moving on to the lighter side of life, July marks the 4th of July holiday nationally here in the United States. It is a holiday that represents our independence and for us in the US that we celebrate. Sure plenty of us are gonna party it up, some will go to some good gigs and in the midst of all that we should recognize that do live in a pretty cool country. Sure there are problems with how the elected officials conduct themselves in scandal after scandal, falling asleep at the switch and then every once in a while they do something that actually helps people instead of themselves.

As you celebrate Independence Day, just remember that you are celebrating you own independence as well. You are independent to make your own choices for better or for worse, you are independent to succeeded or fail, you are independent to be an asset or a liability to the rest of the world.

Use your independence wisely.
